Our Mission

The purpose of the GFGC program is to improve access to quality urban agriculture education and increase food security in southwest Atlanta neighborhoods.

Our goal is to demonstrate that sustainable agriculture can play an important role in addressing urgent problems such as hunger, climate change, and water security.

This is made possible by paying youth to learn the soil science and agricultural skills necessary to design and plant “food forests” in the backyards of participating legacy residents.

What is a Food Forest?

Food forests are models of sustainable agriculture, as they are designed to mimic the ecosystems of natural forests with multiple layers of edible, perennial crops, including trees, bushes and ground and root crops.

With GFGC students receive training on how to design and plant fruit tree guilds. They use different tools to prepare the ground, dig holes, and level mulch.
